The owner of this badge successfully completed the online course from INDES/IDB "Biodiversity and Environmental Impact Assessment – BEIA" comprising 5 modules studied over 6 weeks. They can now count on a solid understanding of good practices for the effective inclusion of biodiversity in environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA).
The topics included in the course were: development and biodiversity; good practices in biodiversity baseline studies; good practices for biodiversity inclusive impact assessment and management planning; effective measures to mitigate project impacts on biodiversity; and biodiversity and the sustainable development challenge.
During this course, the participant completed individual exercises, group activities, contributed to discussion fora, and participated in a test to evaluate how the course changed their understanding. All activities were monitored and evaluated by a tutor.
Criteria
Having undertaken this course, participants will now be able to:
- Understand the need to consider biodiversity in development projects, including commitments, legislations and requirements from MFIs;
- Assess the quality of the biodiversity baseline in an ESIA;
- Evaluate the quality of a risk analysis for the identification of biodiversity impacts;
- Evaluate the adequacy of proposed measures to mitigate impacts to biodiversity, applying the mitigation hierarchy;
- Recognize future challenges for analyzing project biodiversity impacts
